Status of Marine Fisheries in Karnataka: Challenges and Opportunities
The Department of Fisheries Resources and Management, College of Fisheries, Mangalore, in collaboration with Ambigara Choudaiah Peeta, Mangalore University, organized a one-day workshop on 31 August, 2024. The workshop, titled "Status of Marine Fisheries in Karnataka: Challenges and Opportunities", was aimed at disseminating information to students regarding the current status, challenges, and potential opportunities in marine fisheries in Karnataka.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Rajesh KM, Principal Scientist, ICAR-Regional Centre of CMFRI, who presented scientific findings from surveys on the availability of marine resources in Karnataka, the use of diversified fishing methods, and the challenges faced by the state's fishing community. His comprehensive presentation provided valuable insights into the current status of marine fisheries in the region.
The workshop also included interactive activities, notably a quiz competition based on Dr. Rajesh’s lecture. Prizes were awarded to the three top-performing students, encouraging engagement and reinforcing the key takeaways from the session.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. H. N. Anjanayappa, Dean (Fisheries), who lit the ceremonial lamp and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the FRM department in organizing such a scientifically focused program. Dr. Mridula Rajesh, Professor and Head of the Department of FRM, welcomed the dignitaries and participants and emphasized the importance of workshops in enhancing students' knowledge of the field.
Additionally, Dr. Somanna, Coordinator of Ambigara Choudaiah Peeta, Mangalore University, shared insights into the role and activities of Ambigara Choudaiah Peeta. The workshop concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Kumar Naik, Associate Professor I/c, who extended gratitude to all guests and participants for their active involvement.
The one-day workshop was a fruitful event that succeeded in disseminating vital information regarding marine fisheries in Karnataka to the students of the College of Fisheries. The interaction with experts and the engaging activities provided students with practical knowledge and a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the field.




Van Mahotsav
The College of Fisheries, Mangalore, in collaboration with the Lions Club Valencia and Lions Club Kankanady, Padil, Mangalore organized a vibrant and meaningful celebration of Van Mahotsav, the annual tree-planting festival of India on 1 August, 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of tree plantation in combating climate change. The chief guest for the occasion was President Lion Leslie DSouza and Lion Harini C Shetty from Lions Club Valencia and Lions Club Kankanady, Padil, Mangalore. Dr H. N. Anjanayappa Dean presided over the function. Dr. Mridula Rajesh, the NSS Program Officer coordinated the program with the invaluable support of II B.F.Sc students of the college “Ocean Samaritans”.
The celebration took place in the college campus, where students, faculty members, and representatives from the Lions Club came together to plant saplings of various native species. The focus was on promoting biodiversity, ecological balance, and a green future. Over a hundred saplings were planted, including fruit-bearing and medicinal plants, chosen for their suitability to the local environment and their ability to support wildlife.
Dignitaries from the College of Fisheries and the Lions Club addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of Van Mahotsav as a movement that fosters environmental consciousness. They emphasized the role of students and the community in continuing these efforts beyond the festival, encouraging long-term commitment to nurturing the saplings planted.
The event included interactive sessions on the importance of afforestation, the dangers of deforestation, and sustainable environmental practices. Students participated enthusiastically, taking pledges to care for the trees planted and to promote the message of environmental protection.
The collaborative effort between the College of Fisheries and the Lions Club demonstrated the power of community action in addressing global environmental challenges at a local level. Van Mahotsav 2024 at the College of Fisheries was a resounding success, fostering a spirit of environmental stewardship and unity among all participants.
The event concluded with a commitment from both the college and the Lions Club to continue organizing such activities in the future, aiming to make Mangalore greener and more sustainable for generations to come.
